| Member Reports |
|
| Demelza |
At Lake FarmPark's FiberFest, participated in the "sheep to shawl"
workshop. At a dye workshop at the Berea Fairgrounds, did rainbow
dyeing on mohair, wool, and tussah silk (silk clumps together during dyeing
because the seracin is sticky when wet). Learned "twining" (used
in Polynesian cultures instead of plain weaving) at a workshop. |
| Jendriska |
Carded wool. |
| Ceinwyn |
Acquired a needle for needle-felting and is learning the process.
(A discussion followed about what to use for a "pillow," or backstop, to
prevent stab wounds from the needle.) Embroidered a Tudor Rose design
at a workshop held at Stan Hwyet. Organized various patterns
in a notebook. Carding the Tunis fleece. |
| Emma |
Lucetted some cord. Worked on lace-making. Combed Tunis for guild
project. |
| Ellencwen |
Demonstrated carding and spinning at "Pioneer Days," a Girl Scout
Demo at a camp in Peninsula. Her niece Julie came along to help.
Spinning mohair (goat) purchased at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival.
Finshed spinning the Tunis for the guild project. Weaving wool dyed
with sumac on the 60" loom; about one yard is done. Spraying
starch on the warp seems to decrease the number of broken warp threads.
Found some good deals at the Ohio Knitting Mills sale. Warped
up a belt. Planning the guild project; may weave trim.
Attended the Cuyahoga Weavers Guild's dye day. The boxes of
fleece which were sent to Ohio Valley, the carding mill, in May have
already returned. |
| Kore |
Wants a sheep (4H project?). |
| Branwyn |
Completed weaving the second weft-faced belt (wool weft, perle cotton
warp.) Finished the ends for both belts. Also found good
deals at the Ohio Knitting Mills sale. |
| Miscellania |
|
| |
| Ellencwen has two wethers who need a new home; her friend Judy
has a hen and rooster looking for a new place to roost. See
Ellencwen for details. |
| Branwyn purchased a large quantity of undyed yarn at the Ohio Knitting
Mills sale. The yarn is merino wool and is rather loosely spun
(probably not suitable for warp). She paid $3 a pound and will
sell it to interested parties at cost. She will bring a sample
to the next guild meeting. |
| Ellencwen reports that the lambs are now two months old and are doing
fine. The triplets are named Fred (white), George (white),
and Harry (black). April's baby is Spot. |
| Ellencwen attended the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival and brought
back some strange "Space Age" fibers to show the guild. |
| News of the Weird: New Zealanders are considering using sheep
tallow as a replacement for diesel fuel. Sheep power! |
| Demelza, Ceinwyn, and Ellencwen went to FiberFest. Classes were
not very well-attended, but they got to pet the farm animals. |
| Jendriska and Thorsten are throwing a party on July 4th. When
you live out in the country, you can set off fireworks and light bonfires
without the neighbors complaining. |
| The Medina County Fair is coming up in the first week of August; the
spinning demo is on the Friday and Saturday. See Demelza to
be added to the contact list. |
| On August 17th, Ceinwyn is holding the traditional Post-Pennsic Cookout. |
| The Munroe Falls Historical Days demo is Sunday, September 21st, from
2-4. Please see Ceinwyn to RSVP. This demo is intended
to teach people about life in the 1840's (so please don't show up
in your brand-new cotehardie and pointy shoes). Branwyn will
bring the tarp and poles, and Emma will bring the dining fly. |

| Next Meeting |
| July 26th (Saturday) Dye Day, noon at Ceinwyn's house
in Akron. Bring your own choice of grillables plus a side dish to share.
If you have been saving onion skins, please bring them to contribute to
the yellow dye pot. Emma will bring madder for a red dyepot,
and Branwyn will set up an indigo vat. Ceinwyn asked members to refrain
from putting loose fibers in the dyepot, because it makes a mess.
Please bring skeins to dye. |
